02:46 am - On campus housing?
Hi,

My name is Ben, and I am planning on transferring here to SUNY New Paltz - though not for a year and a half (though I will come up occasionally to visit my lovely GF).

I am aware that transfers *usually* don't have the ability to get on campus housing (WTF?), I was wondering though if it would be possible though for them to make exception for somebody with numerous (severe) learning disabilities and some physical/neurological issues, somebody who would be living a good chunk of mileage away from home with these disabilities and thus would need to be closer to campus if not on campus to make travel (and life away from home in general) far less difficult?

Hello Ben!

As you are probably aware, there are exceptions and loopholes to every rule. Though SUNY New Paltz is very strict about On-Campus Housing, its still worth trying to find a way to accommodate your situation. I would recommend contacting Rafael Calderon, Coordinator of Housing Operations, at 845-257-4494 or calderor@newpaltz.edu. If he is unable to assist you, contact the Disability Resource Center at 845-257-3020 or drc@newpaltz.edu, and hopefully they can help you.

Good luck with your housing endeavor!

I'm not aware of that happening before, however the special needs dept. at New Paltz is pretty amazing. I think the same woman is running it now as when I was a student, and she will fight very hard for you.

On one of your trips up I'd suggest you find and talk to them. I don't know if they've moved their offices (it's been literally years since I was on campus) but they used to be in the SUB.

This is great to hear - when I do end up coming up here as a student in however long that is, it won't be before talking to the people you and naduni mentioned.

Seems like, from what I understood, New Paltz seems a lot more willing to help out students with those issues and special needs than where I used to go, which is relieving. ^_^

I will be the third to recommend the Disability Resource Center. They have a very good presence on campus and are definitely in communication with Residence Life when it comes to housing. 845-257-3020 or drc@newpaltz.edu

I came here specifically to reccomend the DRC. You can also log on facebook and see if anynone will request you as a room mate, then petition for a single afterwards.

Hopefully the housing situation at new paltz is not as crazy as it was back when I was at Suny Purchase - where they now stuff 4 kids in rooms designed to fit 2 comfortably and 3 decently.

The max per room right now is 3 people in a room built for 2. Usually this only happens to freshmen, and they can sometimes detriple after the first semester.

[realized this was accidentally posed anonymously before]

So, I know its been a while since I posted in this thread *shakes out the few crickets still chirping* but I was wondering, what are the single dorms like size wise compared to your average double / triple? I know where I used to go they could be quite cramped in size.
